Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca and Diabetic Retinopathy
Abstract of the paper was presented at EASDEC 1998, Barcelona
Patients with diabetic retinopathy (DRP) often report from symptoms of
ocular surface irritation and dry eyes. This study was designed to
evaluate if there is any correlation between the severity of diabetic
retinopathy and dry eyes. 45 patients were included. Severity of
retinopathy was graded according to the ETDRS. Examinations for dry
eyes included Schirmer, BUT, Lipid Layer thickness, fluorescin
staining of the cornea and subjective complaints. Using a point system
for the results of these tests a sicca severity score was calculated.
Taping this score patients with mild to moderate retinopathy were
compared with those with severe to proliferative disease. There was a
statistic significant difference in the sicca severity score between
both groups. (p < 0,05 , t- test) . Ocular surface disease represents
another manifestation of diabetes mellitus and its severity correlates
with the severity of the diabetic retinpathy.
